The 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments provide for local communities to participate in decision making in education for their children. The aim of education should reflect current needs and aspirations of a society and its lasting values and the immediate concerns of a community as well as broad human ideals.

Education should develop in children a commitment to the values enshrined in the constitution of India; these values are respect for democracy, understanding the importance of equality, justice, freedom, concern for others well being, respect for secularism, human dignity and rights.
